Pros and Cons

You may be wondering why we are so committed to promoting knowledge of bioremediation to the public. Here are some advantages and disadvantages that allows you to compare both sides of bioremediation:

Advantages:

- It's a natural process; it's more environmentally friendly when compared with other comparable methods 

- Rather than simply being separated, toxins/chemicals are destroyed/removed

- It's cheap and cost-effective

- Less energy is required when compared to other processes with the same goal

- Less manual supervision is required when compared to other processes

- Minimal physical disturbance of the site

Disadvantages:

- Limitations on the type of contaminants that can be effectively removed

- It's a slow process

- Should the process not be controlled, there is the chance that the contaminants not be fully broken down and result it in being more mobile than the original contaminant 

- Factors such as pH, environmental conditions and temperature have an effect on the process
